– A Call To Repent

In the Kingdom of God repentance is absolutely essential to our spiritual growth and our victory over all evil. According to the Holy Bible, understanding the need for ongoing repentance is kindergarten-level Christianity and Judaism. Hebrews 6:1-2 says “Therefore let us leave the elementary teachings about Christ and go on to maturity, not laying again the foundation of repentance from acts that lead to death, and of faith in God, instruction about baptisms, the laying on of hands, the resurrection of the dead, and eternal judgment.”

As part of preparing the way of the Lord, John the Baptist said “I baptize you with water for repentance. But after me will come One whose sandals I am not fit to carry. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and with fire” (Matthew 3:11). The call to repent as part of preparing to receive the life of Christ is non-negotiable. It’s beginner-level faith that merely prepares the way for the things of the Kingdom. Yet in our modern world, and often even in our churches, we think we can somehow bypass the need to repent of all the Bible calls sin. We want to be so inclusive that we dare not go there lest somebody be offended which might translate into less support for our religious organizations. The result is we risk excluding God Himself from our gatherings by repeatedly ignoring the need to be sanctified by His Word (John 17:17).

When Jesus went around healing people He sometimes included the statement ‘Your sins are forgiven’ as part of the healing (Matthew 9). The truth is that many of our problems have to do with unconfessed sin for which we have not yet repented. Rather than hearing a call from church leaders to repent, or being open to the Holy Spirit convicting us personally, we may run from one professional to the next trying to find healing. We can spend a fortune in the hopes that medical doctors or trained psychiatrists can give us relief when the whole time, what’s really required is revelation from God about where we might need to repent of something and be healed for free.

A good way to measure whether or not this is true is to compare what we believe about or own lives with what is taught in the Holy Bible. Things that are commonplace today, like sexual immorality or exploiting people to get financial support, expose what’s really in our hearts towards God. We can put on all the right appearances and still harbour sin in our hearts with no intention of changing.

Some will argue there’s no way anyone can completely heed all the scriptural principles for holy and healthy living. That’s actually true IF we try to do it in our own power without the influence of the indwelling Holy Spirit. But when we are born again in the Holy Spirit God will do for us what we are completely unable to accomplish without Him, if only we are willing. All it takes is an expression of willingness for God to show us something better as we give Him our lives like a sacrifice of love for Him. Then He transforms us into the people He created us to be, in ways we could only dream about before. Life to the full awaits where there is an attitude of humility and ongoing repentance before Almighty God.

On a collective level this impacts whole nations as we reap what we sow, both individually and nation-wide. This site wouldn’t be complete without calling the nations to times of deep mourning, over all that we’ve allowed to bring about great destruction as a result of falling away from His precepts for healthy, prosperous living. We need to get serious about fasting and seriously repenting in the hopes that even now, God will come to our rescue. We need to take full advantage of these current times of isolation to seek Him in all areas of our lives, to be open to changing our ways wherever necessary, and thus preparing ourselves for a great outpouring of revival and blessing.

The following prayer was recently posted on Facebook which serves as a powerful example of how to repent before God on behalf of a whole nation. Please consider praying through this often as part of the overcoming Church standing undefeated by the gates of hell itself:

A Prayer of Repentance for a Nation

By Pieter Kirstein

God of heaven. God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

God we approach the courts of heaven by the mercy and the righteous blood of Jesus Your Son for we have no righteousness within ourselves. Without You we are nothing and cannot work righteousness in the earth. We humble ourselves before You O great God and we acknowledge our poverty of spirit and we plead for mercy.

We as a people, as a nation come to humble ourselves today before your holy throne of mercy and grace to seek forgiveness for our many sins, transgressions and iniquities.

Father we read and see and choose to listen to what You, THE RIGHTEOUS JUDGE OF ALL MEN, say in Your word in 2 Chronicles 7:14: “If My people, who are called by My name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek My face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land.”

We beseech you, O LORD God of heaven, the great and awesome God, that keeps covenant and mercy for them that love You and observe Your commandments: Let Your ear now be attentive, and Your eyes open, that You may hear the prayer of Your people, which we pray before you now, day and night for our nation, and we confess the sins of our nation, which we have sinned against You: both I and my father’s house have sinned.

We have dealt very corruptly against You, and have not kept the commandments through Your Son Jesus not to hate and allow ourselves to be influenced by hatred and racism but to walk in the power and forgiveness of God’s holy love.

Jesus, all of us have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God and our righteousness have been like filthy rags before You, yet we seek forgiveness and mercy from Your throne; but first oh God we need to search our hearts this day before You and in Your Presence and see if there is hatred, offence, bitterness and unforgiveness against our neighbours and fellow country men out of all nations, tribes and tongues.

Father Your Son warned us in Matthew 18 about the destruction of unforgiveness. How can we expect God to forgive us and heal our land when we are guilty of hating one another?

Jesus You died for us all and without Your forgiveness we all stand condemned and guilty before You. You, THE RIGHTEOUS JUDGE, gave us instruction in Matthew 18 in the story of the unmerciful servant who received forgiveness from the king because he could not pay the debt he owed.

But the same servant went out, and found one of his fellow servants, who owed him a hundred pence: and he laid hands on him, and took him by the throat, saying, Pay me what you owe. And his fellow servant fell down at his feet, and besought him, saying, Have patience with me, and I will pay you all. And he would not: but went and cast him into prison, till he should pay the debt. So when his fellow servants saw what was done, they were very sorry, and came and told unto their lord all that was done. Then his lord, after that he had called him, said unto him, O you wicked servant, I forgave you all that debt, because you desired me: Should not you also have had compassion on your fellow servant, even as I had pity on you? And his lord was angry, and delivered him to the jailers, till he should pay all that was due unto him. So likewise shall My heavenly Father do also unto you, if you from your hearts forgive not everyone his brother their trespasses.

Jesus, Son of God we as a nation repent of all racism and hatred even in our bloodlines. Father we confess and renounce unforgiveness, all murder, all family curses and bloodline curses operating against us because of these things. We renounce and repent of all the bloodshed in our family lines and also within our hearts Father God.

We don’t know the things our ancestors and forefathers have done which gave Satan legal right to work death and destruction against our lives but Father today we choose to bring all sins, transgressions and iniquities before Your throne; even all generation strongmen.

Father we confess and renounce their works, their altars, all covenants and agreements made with the kingdom of darkness. We repent of all blood covenants made through murder, racism, witchcraft, hatred and death. You are a God of love and we choose to walk in love and we ask You that You by Your Spirit bring us into agreement with Your love.

Father we ask You to please search our hearts and minds this day and to cleanse and transform us to be the people You desire us to be because God You have the power and You are the Potter and we are as clay before You.

We pray and ask like David Your servant in Psalms 51:10 “Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”

We pray according to Psalms 139:23-24 ‘Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

Father we renounce, divorce and break by the power of the blood of Jesus all hexes, vexes, curses, charms, ritual vows, incantations and spells of all pagan religions and practices within ourselves and also our bloodlines. We repent of all covenants and promises made to Satan and we ask that You destroy it by the blood of Your holy Son.

Jesus we choose to renounce all altars of worship and sacrifice that were ever erected by any of us including our forefathers. We renounce all satanic works in our bloodlines, all satanic power structures and strongholds. Yes Father everything that exalted itself against the knowledge of Christ and we ask that the hammer and the fire of God by the word of the Lord now crush these things forever over and within all past, present and future generations, in Jesus name.

Father of heaven we remind You of Your promises in 2 Chronicles 7 that You said “And as for you, if you will walk before Me, as David your father walked, and do according to all that I have commanded you, and shall observe My statutes and My judgments; Then will I establish the throne of your kingdom, according as I have covenanted with David your father, saying, There shall not fail you a man to be ruler in Israel.

But if you turn away, and forsake My statutes and My commandments, which I have set before you, and shall go and serve other gods, and worship them; Then will I pluck them up by the roots out of my land which I have given them; and this house, which I have sanctified for my name, will I cast out of My sight, and will make it to be a proverb and a byword among all nations. And this house, which is exalted, shall be an astonishment to everyone that passes by it; so that he shall say, Why has the LORD done thus unto this land, and unto this house?

And it shall be answered, Because they forsook the LORD God of their fathers, who brought them forth out of the land of Egypt, and laid hold on other gods, and worshiped them, and served them: therefore has he brought all this evil upon them.

Father we acknowledge and confess and repent according to 1 John 1:8: “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. If we confess our sins then God is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Father we need forgiveness and radical change of direction and heart. We repent of all words of anger and hatred which we have spoken against You or any man, for God, Your word says in Proverbs 18:21 “Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof.”

We read in James 3:6 “And the tongue is a fire, a world of iniquity: so is the tongue among our members, that it defiles the whole body, and sets on fire the course of nature; and it is set on fire by hell. For every kind of beasts, and of birds, and of serpents, and of things in the sea, is tamed, and has been tamed by mankind: But the tongue can no man tame; it is an unruly evil, full of deadly poison. With this we bless God, even the Father; and with this we curse men, who are made after the similitude of God. Out of the same mouth proceeds blessing and cursing. My brethren, these things ought not so to be.

Does a fountain send forth at the same place sweet water and bitter? Can the fig tree, my brethren, bear olive berries? either a vine, figs? so can no fountain both yield salt water and fresh. Who is a wise man and endued with knowledge among you? let him show out of a good life his works with meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter envying and strife in your hearts, boast not, and lie not against the truth. This wisdom descends not from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envying and strife is, there is confusion and every evil work. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and compliant, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. And the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by them that make peace.

Father, we surrender our hearts and minds to You and ask that You work in us Your promise spoken in Ezekiel 36: 23: “And I will sanctify My great name, which was profaned among the nations, which you have profaned in the midst of them; and the nations shall know that I am the LORD, says the Lord GOD, when I shall be sanctified in you before their eyes.

For I will take you from among the nations, and gather you out of all countries, and will bring you into your own land. Then will I sprinkle clean water upon you, and you shall be clean: from all your filthiness, and from all your idols, will I cleanse you. A new heart also will I give you, and a new spirit will I put within you: and I will take away the stony heart out of your flesh, and I will give you a heart of flesh. And I will put My spirit within you, and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you shall keep My judgments, and do them. And you shall dwell in the land that I gave to your fathers; and you shall be my people, and I will be your God.”

I will also save you from all your uncleannesses: and I will call for the grain, and will increase it, and lay no famine upon you. And I will multiply the fruit of the tree, and the increase of the field, that you shall receive no more reproach of famine among the nations. Then shall you remember your own evil ways, and your doings that were not good, and shall loathe yourselves in your own sight for your iniquities and for your abominations. Not for your sakes do I this, says the Lord GOD, be it known unto you: be ashamed and confounded for your own ways, O house of Israel. Thus says the Lord GOD; In the day that I shall have cleansed you from all your iniquities I will also cause you to dwell in the cities, and the ruins shall be rebuilt.”

And the desolate land shall be tilled, instead of lying desolate in the sight of all that passed by. And they shall say, This land that was desolate has become like the garden of Eden; and the waste and desolate and ruined cities have become fortified, and are inhabited. Then the nations that are left round about you shall know that I the LORD rebuild the ruined places, and replant that which was desolate: I the LORD have spoken it, and I will do it. Thus says the Lord GOD; I will yet for this be inquired of by the house of Israel, to do it for them; I will increase them with men like a flock. As the holy flock, as the flock of Jerusalem in her solemn feasts; so shall the waste cities be filled with flocks of men: and they shall know that I am the LORD.

God, our fight and struggle is not against each other as redeemed people but against Satan who wants us to destroy each other through offenses, bitterness, resentment, grudges, rage, past hurts, unforgiveness and destruction caused by us and our forefathers. But we choose to start afresh with You today and really forgive one another because nobody likes war and destruction especially when we can turn ourselves in repentance to the God of love.

Jesus, we choose to obey your words given to us and our children in Matthew 5:44: “But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them who despitefully use you, and persecute you; That you may be the children of your Father who is in heaven: for He makes his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the just and on the unjust. For if you love them who love you, what reward have you? Do not even the tax collectors the same? And if you greet your brethren only, what do you more than others? Do not even the tax collectors so? Be you therefore perfect, even as your Father who is in heaven is perfect.”

Father, we as a nation also repent for murdering our babies through abortion. We repent God for our sexual lust and every form of promiscuity. We repent of all fornication and sexual sins even ungodly fantasies. We repent of phallus worship, sex magic and the sin of pornography. God, we repent of not raising our children in the reverence and ways of God. We repent of every form of idolatry and we ask You, as we pray this prayer Father, that Your Holy Spirit will change our hearts in Jesus name.

We repent of the sins we comitted according to Galatians 5: adultery, fornication, impurity, licentiousness, idolatry, witchcraft, hatred, strife, jealousy, wrath, selfishness, divisions, heresies, envyings, murders, drunkenness, revelings and every other kind of evil and wickedness which grieves the heart of God.

We repent on behalf of our nation and every family bloodline for the sins, transgressions and iniquities that we have committed against ourselves and You, in the likeness of Sodom and Gomorrah through homosexuality, perversion, drug abuse, lies, slander, gossip, false religion and idolatry.

Father please cleanse us from these things and by Your might and power bring our lives into agreement with God’s will, plan and purpose.

Father we ask that You open and release the prophetic scrolls according to Your holy counsel over our land and that You pour out conviction and repentance and restoration according to Joel 2 and 3 in Jesus name.

In the name of your Son, the Lord Jesus Christ who is Immanuel, God in the flesh who conquered death itself, amen and amen.
