– Defending The Nation God’s Way

The Biblical way to defend a Judeo-Christian nation is not primarily by armed forces nor gaining the upper hand at a political level. Where our human strength fails, a nation can still be successfully defended from the evil one when at least some of its citizens apply scriptural precepts to their own lives, to make it happen.

When we invite God to transform us into overcomers we find ourselves in a relationship with the One who is sovereign over the nations. Isaiah 40 says that to Him, the nations are like a drop in a bucket. And Revelation 2:26 says “To him who overcomes I will give authority over the nations.” We come to a place of spiritual authority in Christ so we have a say in what comes next as the nations are thrown into turmoil.

The Bible speaks of a company of nations raised up alongside Israel to fulfill God’s destiny for them all (Genesis 35:11). If we read to the end of the Bible we see that at least some of the nations are redeemed in the Kingdom of God. Revelation 21 and 22 say they will walk by the light of the Lamb and feed on healing leaves of the tree of life. They don’t get there by people doing what they think is best in their current frame of mind, or by winning at a political level. They get there when the full gospel is put to work in the lives of believing Jews and Christians who stand together on behalf of one another, to exalt the Name of the Lord in this world.

They get there when the Spirit-led Church in those nations is able to break free from worldly constraints to shine like a blazing beacon of God’s holiness, His lavish love for humanity and His amazing grace. The final battle for the nations cannot be won in the political realms. It comes back to defending the true Spirit-led Church against the gates of hell itself, and winning. The roar of the Lion of Judah resounds from heaven to all of God’s Kingdom established on the earth through the Church. It happens in a way that redeems everything which can be delivered from evil, into the brilliance of His Presence among us. The prayer is fully answered that His Kingdom comes, His will is done on earth as it is in heaven.

The well-being of a nation depends on the spiritual health of its Church. The true Church (those who worship in Spirit and in truth – John 4:24) is raised up to serve as a house of prayer for the nations. It’s meant to be a powerhouse of God’s light beaming out like a blazing torch into the darkness of this world. Like a lighthouse built on solid rock, one of its main functions is to not be moved no matter how powerful the storms become all around it. Then people can use it as a moral compass to decide whether they are on course in representing the sovereign will of God, or not. The darker this world becomes the more important it is for the Church to not be moved. And the more important it is for the LOVE of God to be front and center of its ministry as fear threatens to overtake.

Several key principles give way to the authority of Christ over the nations. One is the call to take up the cross and walk as Jesus did. The true faith is not about religious posturing nor financial gain but looking for ways to spread the love of God by laying down something of our own lives to make things better for another. Sacrificial love is at the core of the Church’s victory over the gates of hades. Lose the love, and nothing else works. It’s like playing a game of football in which the love of Jesus is the ball. We only make progress if we don’t drop it. The greatest gains come from going deep into the opponent’s turf without losing the ball but if we get there without it, we gain nothing.

The way to keep ourselves from losing the love is to embrace the call of God to follow the example of His Son. In ways only He knows, He opens up spiritual paths that lead to complete victory for the nations in His Kingdom when we commit to take up the cross and walk as Jesus did. Then the love flows like a tsunamis to the world’s hurting, broken, destitute and addicted. It regenerates as a covenant in our own families to sanctify our homes, as well.

Another key precept to invite the authority of God over the nations, is about reconciliation in marriages and families. God’s Word says “See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the Lord comes. He will turn the hearts of the fathers to the children, and the hearts of the children to the fathers, or else I will come and strike the land with a curse” (Malachi 4:5-6). To avoid the curse that may come on the land due to so much evil, it’s critically important to have relationship problems resolved between fathers and their children.

As the author of this site testifies one of the most powerful roles that a wife and mother can play in God’s Kingdom, is to facilitate this. Then the problems facing the nations are challenges that can be resolved from this place of authority in Christ. To turn the heart of a father to a son or daughter, and vice versa, carries great weight in a relationship with God the Father. The love and anointing that arises brings assurance that our prayers for the nations are being heard and heeded by the One who is sovereign over all.

Yet another important principle is to refrain from placing too much emphasis on financial issues; so much that we wrongly believe we are stuck if we don’t have enough. Jesus said “The thief comes only to steal, to kill and destroy but I have come that they may have life and have it to the full” (John 10:10). It doesn’t depend on how well we’re doing to get financial resources. That’s an area where the enemy of God would try to hold the Church hostage IF he could. The legalistic way of using money in the Church becomes a snare. Sometimes it’s God’s will for believers caught in this snare to insist on free-falling in God’s grace for awhile to get out from under the legalism and into a realm where we experience Him loving us anyway, and meeting our needs anyway, simply because we are His and He loves us unconditionally.

Jesus said “No one can serve two masters. Either he will love the one and hate the other or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money” (Matthew 6:24) Some Bible versions use the word ‘mammon’ instead of ‘money’ which speaks of the worldly things money can buy. Since the Bible also says ‘God IS love’ then this must mean ‘you cannot serve both LOVE and money.’ And since we will hate the one and love the other, if there is truly so much love for God in our churches then where is the hatred for money or mammon? Where is the intense aversion to all that money can do to derail the Spirit-led body of Christ?

The truth is that in our prosperous western nations the influence of money is undermining the power of Christ in the churches, to a large extent. Whether the problem is not enough, or being side-tracked by the deceitfulness of wealth, the main issue is the way in which both lead us away from the love of God. Fear over the future, attacks of the enemy to prevent the churches from even gathering, bad news about national economies being undermined, and much more all contribute to the loss of God’s love being the primary motivation in our lives. Even worse is when some try to teach that God will not give anything to us if we don’t first give to them.

The solution is to double down on remaining in the love of God, come hell or high water. Get into the terms of His regenerating covenant and teach them to our children. Refuse to be part of spiritual movements in which the so-called elect of God behave instead as if they are the ‘elite’ – the untouchables who require more and more money to build ministries like financial pyramid schemes while distancing themselves from those who donate. Without the loving relationships as well, we risk falling away from the power and authority of Christ that manifests from a Spirit-led walk the way of the cross.

Consider instead, or in addition to supporting the prosperity gospel leaders, putting financial resources into the hands of our own children and telling them to go out and help the homeless, feed the poor, serve widows and orphans all around us. Consider using our own homes as sanctuaries for others seeking the true gospel in simplicity and purity of spirit. Because the Lord is coming to turn the pyramids upside down. The grassroots level is the place to build something new for His glory alone.

The truly elect of God are not elected to become wealthy, although that may happen as well along the way. They are elected to share in His suffering in order that they may also share in His glory (Romans 8:17). Take away the suffering for the sake of the gospel and we miss a powerful anointing of His love, miraculous healing power and authority over the nations. The anointing of God is not meant to send us to the bank; it’s meant to send us to the cross and beyond into Kingdom living.

In the fullness of God’s Kingdom the Church aligns itself with Israel and the Jewish people as defined by the scriptures. At the cross, Jesus Christ served as an atonement for the sin of humanity to bring about a complete unity between Jew and believing Gentile (nonJew), so both can receive His Kingdom on earth as He is in heaven. The nations benefit greatly from such a union by prospering at the hand of God.

It happens largely in spite of the realms of politics rather than because of them. To walk with God the way of the cross to find out how, is to be rendered as a Kingdom son for whom all of creation awaits (Romans 8:19-21). There is the authority to stand in the gap for whole nations at a time, overflowing with the love of the Most High God from the New Jerusalem above, who is free and who is our mother (Galatians 4:29). This is a realm of authority that the powers of this world can’t touch, but can only behold as they are held fully accountable before Him.

The Bible teaches us how to do our part to defend a nation while leaving it up to God to deal with the evil-doers. A good place to start is with His words to Israel as they were entering the Promised Land. In Deuteronomy 6:6-9 He said “These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Write them on the door-frames of your houses and your gates.”

In Deuteronomy 5 He gave the Israelites the Ten Commandments with a word of caution to always bear them in mind, saying “Walk in obedience to all the Lord your God has commanded you, so that you may live long and prosper and prolong your days in the land that you will possess.” This was primarily for Israel but it also works for the group of nations God raised up alongside Israel (Genesis 35:11).

The Judeo-Christian nations in which we live today constitute that community of nations coming alongside Israel. One of them is Canada. As much as some would like to change the cultural landscape by introducing all kinds of different ideologies, the fact remains that when Jews and Christians claim the land for the Kingdom of God, the Living God of the Holy Bible gives highest priority to them. He hears the prayers of the saints who love Him and keep His commands.

There’s no way He would choose to hand it all over to other people instead, who don’t care to know Him or observe His ways. Instead He allows His enemies to go so far in order to get the attention of the people who love Him, so they’ll draw nearer to Him for their deliverance. Then He acts on their behalf. He allows them to do all the work of amassing wealth in order to hand it over to the ones who learn to put first things first. As Ecclesiastes 2:26 says “To the man who pleases Him, God gives wisdom, knowledge and happiness, but to the sinner He gives the task of gathering and storing up wealth to hand it over to the one who pleases God.”

And so the best way to defend Canada during these perilous times is to get very serious with God about it on a personal basis. With petitions of prayers and worship, commit to serve Him wholeheartedly in our own homes, then make it known to others where we stand to represent His regenerating covenant of love. As the scripture says ‘write these commandments on the doorframes of your homes and your gates.’

A powerful practice in many Jewish homes is to post the ‘shema’ on the doorframes of their dwellingplaces. The ‘shema’ is a declaration of faith which quotes Moses in Deuteronomy 6:4: “Hear O Israel, the Lord your God, the Lord is one.” He went on to say “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.”

The Christian equivalent would be to use Jesus’s words, who quoted Moses when He said the most important commandment is this: “Hear O Israel, the Lord your God is one. You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.” Then He said the second most important is “Love your neighbour as yourself.”

He explained that the law and the words of the prophets hang on these two commandments. They form the basis for law and order that is from God for Judeo-Christian civilization. To post these in our homes and see them as foundational to defending a nation, is to be in a position to rebuild whatever is falling apart, on a sure foundation. It’s the way to protect our own homes first and foremost, as God’s Word is true that He encamps around those who fear Him to deliver them (Psalm 34:7).

Yet another powerful way to defend a nation is to raise up movements of praise and worship to God. Psalm 22:3 says “He inhabits the praises of His people.” The King James version says that He inhabits the praise of Israel. He literally manifests His Presence in our praise and worship. It attracts Him to come and take over where nothing else will work in certain situations. There was a time when Judeo-Christian nations enjoyed gatherings to hear congregational singing for this purpose. The impact reaches into heavenly realms to drive back powers of darkness. It displaces them with His Presence keeping watch over His people.

At times when our nations are in peril it’s more important than ever to sing out to the Lord for our own well-being and to change the atmosphere around us. We can do it as a group in a spiritual gathering or we can sing by ourselves when walking outdoors or working around in our homes. He knows who belong to Him. He has countless ways to defend us personally and nation-wide if we will honour Him this way.

The enemy of our souls would love for us to be so fixated on the things of darkness that we actually ascribe more power to that, than to the greatness of God. He has shown in His Word that there is no force than can succeed against Him. He can defeat the mightiest army and outsmart the most deviant masterminds at the helm of political power. And He will do it when we commit to give Him highest priority of all.

The truth is He has already done it for Canada. What we now witness is a torrent of backlash from the enemy who is a sore loser. God has already used Canada to come alongside Israel in a unique way on different occasions. A good example was seen at the World’s Fair – Expo 67 -in Montreal. At a time when Israel endured much persecution it had to fight the Six Day War amid a huge anti-Israel propaganda campaign. Meanwhile, in Montreal, two Jewish pavilions were set up to broadcast to the world, the carefully documented history and truth about Israel. As millions of people from every nation passed through the gates of Expo ’67 they would have been filtering the news about Israel’s current struggles through what they learned in Montreal.

More recently, at the G8 Summit in 2011, Canada’s Prime Minister Stephen Harper stood all alone to defend Israel’s post-Six Day War boundaries against an onslaught of pressure to give them up, at the leading of the previous U.S. President. With a thriving population of Jewish citizens in Canada both Montreal and Toronto set aside one day a year and call it “Israel Day” to celebrate the Jewish state. Many of those whose hearts are committed to God in Christian gatherings, also recognize His heart for the fulfillment of prophecy related to the state of Israel. They stand in support of it because of their love for Him as the Holy One of Israel.

Such people represent the reason that God would continue to defend Canada regardless of what current evil may be happening to try to steer the nation in a whole other direction. He Himself has gone ahead to drive a stake of ownership into the nation of Canada for His higher purposes. We can either draw nearer to Him to discern His sovereign will above all else, or try in our own power to win political battles in the belief we stand to lose if we don’t.

So we encourage fellow Canadian believers to take heart, to do what they can in their own homes and realms of influence, and call on the Name of the Lord to take it from there. The heart of Judeo-Christian Canada still beats strong in the face of the adversary. The love for God above all else, speaks the loudest to fall. Canada is destined to be redeemed in His Kingdom at His hand. He imparts visions and revelation to His people to declare the victory even while the enemy tries desperately to create the appearance of having the upper hand. It’s actually his last howl of protest at having already lost, soon to be gone permanently. (See articles on this site under the heading TESTIMONY for more details).

“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. … The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; He will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged” (Deuteronomy 31:6,8).
