A PROPHETIC WORD FOR CANADA

Peter Marshall’s book, The Light & the Glory*, records a prophecy given by Puritan Reformers around 1776 when the British Empire Loyalists turned north to settle in Canada in order to remain under British rule. When zealous Americans sought to persecute them because of this decision, the Spirit of the Lord spoke through their prophets saying:

… the Holy Spirit spoke in my heart that … Canada would open the way for Jesus Christ to return to this earth.
“Do not hinder these people. Let them move to Canada. Do not seek to incorporate the land of Canada into America. I am in the independence of America from Britain, and will mightily use this country. But Canada has been reserved by Me for the last days for a special work.”
“I am paraphrasing this from memory,” says retired pastor and intercessor, James Watt, a Canadian who resides in Federal Way, Washington. Watt’s ministry has been to call Canadian Christians to intercession for their country.

As challenging as it is to understand this prophetic word for Canada, the reality is that the nations of this world are like a drop in a bucket to God (Isaiah 40:15). A remnant of Canadian believers have been called out of the religious organizations as well as out of the political realms to commune with the Living God wherever they happen to meet – in homes, marketplaces, coffee shops and more. The best place of all is the great Canadian outdoors in all its glorious seasons. That way we learn things from God about His design for life on the planet, that we wouldn’t any other way. As Romans 1:20 says “God’s invisible qualities – His eternal power and divine nature – have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made.”

This is saying that God designed the natural creation all around us to teach us about Himself. Everything from microscopic life to endless galaxies sprawled across the heavens, tells us something of who God really is. In Canada we are extremely blessed to enjoy vast tracts of forests, prairies, tundra, and seacoasts to be still before Him and learn the lessons. He has something to teach us through it that we won’t learn in from politics or religion which exists only to serve a select few.

All of creation is waiting for something that will preserve freedom for eternity – the birthing of Kingdom sons as described in the scriptures. Kingdom sons are those who hear the voice of God for themselves and heed whatever they hear that they know for certain is from Him (Romans 8:15); Hebrews 12). Then He uses them to over-rule all the powers of darkness coming against the nations that He established to show the works of His hands; not to glorify mere humans in their positions of power regardless of what evil they may do to get there.

The highest priority of the Kingdom of God in Canada, is not the preservation of the geo-political nation as we know it. When the Lord comes to shake everything that can be shaken, so what cannot be shaken will remain undefeated, a lot of what we consider to be good in Canada will be gone (Hebrews 12:26-27). Movements raised up to destroy the basic family unit, to steal, kill and destroy life, to undermine the Judeo-Christian foundations, and to come against the Kingdom of Heaven itself by causing chaos and anarchy, will not succeed.

Instead the Lord has chosen Canada to bring forth modern day believers who know how to take up the cross and walk as Jesus did, for the same reasons He did: to over-rule every other power, ruler and authority in this dark world and displace them with His Kingdom of eternal peace, love and prosperity. They bring the light and preserve the love in situations that produce fear and hatred. This is actually happening now to great effect, but it’s hard to see for different reasons.

One is that the media outlets are under such tight control the only way to have any sense of what’s true, is through a two-way relationship with the Living God who said “I am the way, the TRUTH, and the life” (John 14:6). When the truth seems impossible to find and chaos reigns around us, we find it anyway in a relationship with God through His Son – Jesus Christ (Yeshuah HaMashiach in the Hebrew language). We receive Him as Lord and Saviour, then invite Him to take up residence in our lives by the power of His indwelling Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit is called ‘the Spirit of truth who guides us into all truth’ (John 16:13). For those who believe it and heed the call we find exactly the light, the love, the source of law and order and the truth we need to know how to stand undefeated by the powers of darkness raging against our nation. We find our way into a relationship with the sovereign Lord and receive divine revelation from Him about how the victory is already here for the nation of Canada. We receive wisdom to know what we can do on a personal level as well as collectively, to bring the fullness of this victory to completion on earth as He is in heaven.

In Canada love and freedom go together like maple syrup and pancakes. As the old saying goes, love is a choice. We show love for others by the choices we make on their behalf and we need freedom to make them. The alternative is a situation where our God-given freedom to make our own choices is denied. The first casualty is His redeeming love because we are forced into a way of life against our will.

Love can’t thrive where there is no freedom. And freedom can’t thrive when we don’t take responsibility to defend it, but become passive when ruthless people attempt to destroy our way of life. There is a right way and a wrong way to stand up to them. The right one is God’s way as defined in the scriptures, so love and freedom are sustained, not destroyed.

When the political realms become so polluted with treachery against the general population, and fraught with deception and theft on a huge scale, the answers come from the Kingdom of God; not so much by trying to engage at a political level. One of the reasons is that the love of God must be at the forefront of the victory and the political battles are such that all the frustration produces a lot of fear and hatred. Without the love, nothing else works. But God’s redeeming love opens a way that sees some people repent for wrongs done, turn 180 degrees to set things right, and lead movements to call others to do the same. This is one of the roles of the true Church – those who worship in Spirit and in truth (John 4:24).

Canada is a nation built on freedom and love for humanity and it doesn’t work any other way. What other nations might call a travesty – to allow people from all walks of life to immigrate and call a western nation their home – actually works well in Canada IF the love of God is allowed to take the lead. It’s not just about sharing human compassion but also loving God Himself by heeding His Biblical precepts that uphold freedom and peace for eternity, and teaching others how to do the same.

The love has to go hand-in-hand with instruction about why Canada was begun as a Judeo-Christian nation and how to sustain both at the same time. If we refuse to do that, the powers of darkness which we currently see at work are able to exploit the Canadian way of life to turn it into something completely opposite where freedom is taken away. The solution is always to get back to the Judeo-Christian foundations as established by the Creator in this part of the world.

This section about prophecy in Canada goes hand-in-hand with another section on this site about cross-bearing. Taking up the cross to follow Christ is the narrow path to eternal life in His Kingdom. In a world of increasing fear and strife the way of the cross produces an ever-increasing revelation and experience of the lavish love of Jesus Christ. Along with it come visions, dreams, spiritual impartations and ultimately the fullness of His Kingdom on earth as He is in heaven.

The believers in Canada are no fools to let go of what is destined to pass away in order to take hold of the stuff of eternity. What may look like defeat in the eyes of this world is in fact cross-bearing, leading to a Kingdom destiny that all of creation is waiting to see.

Every human being deserves a chance to receive eternal life in Christ Jesus with all that entails – unconditional love, forgiveness for wrongs done in the past, and a new life in an environment of peace and freedom. Canadians who know how to stand firm on the rock of revelation about Jesus Christ as the Son of God, also know how to make this happen in a way that over-rules the darkness instead of coming under it. The end result is a nation destined to receive the fullness of the Kingdom of God and usher in the return of Jesus Christ.

This section highlights the destiny of Judeo-Christian Canada including the role of First Nations citizens who have proven to be leaders in protecting the environment and bringing forth the healing leaves for other nations. See other articles in this section for more details.
